The Bin Caddy
The Bin Caddy

Manufactured by Merlin Engineering

I have invented, designed, and manufactured the bin caddy for the purpose of funding our foundation to support the sick kids and families in outback Australia that are in urgent need of capital city hospital medical treatment through the Queensland based "Angel Flight" organisation.

They are a volunteer organisation that receives no government support. Pilots volunteer their planes and time to fly the family to the cities for treatment and return them, while BP & Mobil discount the fuel costs.

I am proud to be an "Earth Angel" when I am notified to pick up a family from Essendon airport and transport them to the Royal Children's Hospital or other, then return them to the airport after treatment.

I believe this is an essential public service that deserves all the support it can get.

The standard bin caddy is light weight, easy to manoeuvre and carries your garbage bin with ease. The design of the bin caddy centres around the balance point of the loaded bin.

In the above illustration, you can see there is no touching of the garbage bin at any time. The caddy lifting lugs simply slide under the handle of the bin, you just pull back on the caddy handle, the bin comes off the ground, and away you go on pneumatic tires. The design of the caddy reduces the weight of the bin to zero, requiring no effort at all to manoeuvre it, and in fact you can run as fast as you like with it.

The pneumatic tires makes it possible to travel over fairly rough terrain, sticks, limbs, and gutters, smoothing out the obstacles that would normally tip over the bin, or tip it over forward if you were to be pushing the bin ahead of you. The bin wheels are so inadequate for what they are intended to do.

If you wish to take out the garbage and recycle, both bins at once, then prior to picking up the rubbish bin, you lift up the hoop attached to the cross arm and swing it up above the bin lugs to the handle. You pick up the garbage bin first, then drop the loop back down on top of the garbage bin.

To load the second bin, "the recycle bin", you wheel the bin and trolley up to the back of the recycle bin, by leaning the handle forward, you can then hook the lifting lugs on the hoop over the handle of the recycle bin. By pulling back on the handle it will then lift both bins off the ground, allowing them to be moved easily to where you want them.

When you pull the caddy handle toward you and pushing it down to the pushing or pulling level. there is a modest upward force on the handle, the amount will depend on the load in either of the bins.  The axle width and the pneumatic tire has been designed to give maximum stability and a smooth ride. The caddy can be left attached to the garbage bin, or stored on its own stand out of the way.

The illustration also demonstrates how both bins are carried at the same time. The bin caddy can be operated easily by children or the elderly.

This illustration demonstrates how easy it is to hook up both bins to a motor vehicle.
The difference between the standard caddy and the heavy duty caddy is:
  1. The heavy duty caddy is fitted with a heavy duty steel wheel assembly with precision bearings . This heavy duty wheel assembly is required so the trolley is able to withstand weights of up to 100kgs and is able to withstand speeds up to 60kph.
  2. Has additional hook devices to ensure the additional weight is transferred evenly across the bin handle.
  3. The wheel design of the standard trolley is not suitable for this operation or weight as it has a non-precision wheel bearing assembly, and is intended as a hand push trolley only.
The heavy duty caddy has been designed for towing and/or customers that wish to utilise there wheelie bins for heavy materials application.

We have manufactured an extra heavy bin caddy that is aimed at the commercial or industrial users, it has extra lifting lugs to spread the load on the bin handle. It will take either the 90 ltr or the 240 ltr bins, but is specifically aimed at the larger 240 ltr, which is the normal recycle bin. This trolley has been tested with a 200 kilogram load in the 240 ltr, and is still relatively easy to move.
